Albinus was born in Africa and became a soldier at an early age. He served with distinction and was governor of Britain at the death of Pertinax. In order to keep rebellion down in the West while he consolidated his position against Didius Julianus and Pescennius Niger, also contenders for the throne, Septimius Severus offered Albinus the position of Caesar, which he accepted. Once Italy and the East were under the contol of Severus, however, he declared Albinus a public enemy (Severus was determined to be the absolute master of the Empire). Albinus was declared Augustus by his troops and had no other option but to fight. After some initial successes he was defeated in a great battle on 19 February 197 near Lugdunum (Lyons). He later committed suicide and his body, together with those of his wife and children who were put to death, was thrown into the Rhone River.

Trajan Decius was born around AD 201 in Lower Pannonia, rose to the senatorial level early in his career and was governor of Lower Moesia from AD 234-238. When rebellion broke out in Upper Moesia, Decius was sent by Philip to restore order. But the rebels were able to force Decius, under threat of death, to assume the purple and march on Italy. In a battle near Verona Philip and his son were slain and Decius became the sole ruler of the empire. He spent most of his short reign fighting barbarians along the Northern borders and was killed in battle against the Goths at Abrittus late in AD 251, along with his elder son, Herennius. The reign of Decius is best known, however, for his vigorous persecution of Christians, during which time Pope Fabian lost his life.

Postumus was a man of humble origins who had proved his worth as a soldier and leader and was appointed commander of the Rhine legions by Valerian I. In AD 259 he rebelled against Gallienus and established a separate kingdom in Britain, Gaul and Spain where he ruled well and wisely for a decade. In AD 268 Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus rebelled against Postumus; although the usurper was quickly destroyed, Postumus refused to allow his troops to sack Moguntiacum (Mainz) which had supported the rebellion and was killed by his troops, an action they are said to have regretted later.

From this point on in thr Gaulic Empire, the quality of the coinage went down fast. Most examples are on crudely made very ragged flans. These coins are not chipped or broken as many may think, but rather have flans that are very crudely made from slices off of rods of metal made from molten metal poured into a hole in the gound. These rods were often ragged and were never finished off any more before making the flans from them.

Quintillus was the younger brother of Claudius II and was proclaimed emperor by the troops at Aquileia upon the death of Claudius. After a short time of undisputed power, he was challenged by Aurelian who had been proclaimed emperor by his troops at Sirmium. Realizing that their rival was superior in number, the troops of Quintillus deserted him and in desperation he committed suicide. Such was the life of a Roman emperor in the late 3rd Century with their fickled troops.

Carus was preatorian prefect under Probus and was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers upon the former's death. He elevated his sons, Carinus and Numerian, to the rank of caesar and set out with Numerian on an expedition against the Persians, leaving Carinus behind to govern the western provinces. The campaign was successful, but he was killed by lightning at his camp at Ctesiphon in late 283. This coin was struck by his sons to commemorate his death.

ROMAN SPECIAL 1 Silver Coins of the Roman Empire. I have recently acquired a group of silver coins from the glory days of the Roman Empire. Most of these date to the 1st through early 3rd Centuries AD. Most of the earlier ones grade Fine to about Very Fine range while later ones are generally Very Fine. Most are denarii but I do have a few nice antoniniani. These are nicer than the previous batches and will go fast, so order soon. While they last....$50; 2 different for $90 Photo

ROMAN SPECIAL 2 Late Roman Bronzes, ca AD260-400+. Coins of the later Roman emperors from Gallienus to Arcadius and Honorius and beyond, mostly Antoniniani, AE3 and AE4 size, but including an occassional centenionalis or follis now and then and grading FINE or better (no spectacular blazers or gems, just solid mid-grade coins). Great for beginning collectors with a small budget or for the younger ones who want to get as much variety as possible for their limited dollars. Also good for the dealer who wants to carry a few inexpensive coins. These are attributed as to ruler and reverse type and packaged in individual flips. I offer these while I can in lots of:
3 different....$15 ($5 each)
10 different....$50 ($5 each)
I also have some nicer examples of the same types as above, priced at:
3 different....$30 ($10 each)
10 different....$100 ($10 each)
