The Persian coinage was based largely on the system used by Lydia prior to her absorption into the Persian Empire and, indeed, the earliest coins struck under Persian kings were most likely made using Lydian types and dies. The Persian kings soon changed the coinage to this basic type, which was used throughout the rest of the Persian Empire with only minor changes in style and types. The Half-stater of Lydia was equal to the Siglos of Persia.

Centered slightly low, head and front appendages clear, rear appendages partially off, light tone, nice example, Very Fine....$650 PhotoThe island state of Aigina was probably the first in the western Greek world to issue coins, spreading rapidly from there to Athens, Corinth, and Euboia as well as other important centers. They had an extensive trading network and their weight standard was adopted in Crete and Asia Minor as well as parts of Greece. They were eclipsed by Athens after the Persian Wars, subsequently being captured by Athens in 456 BC, and never regained their importance in the Greek world. 25 years later the inhabitants were expelled from the island, only being able to return after the defeat of Athens in the Peloponnesian Wars in 404 BC.
