GREEK BRONZE COINS

Last update: 26 July 2010

Greek Bronze Coins

(I have attempted to scan many of the bronzes to convey a better idea of what they look like. Please note that some have come out with the color off somewhat. I hope to improve this as I learn more about scanning techniques. Few Greek bronzes are of known denomination and so most are designated by a number following AE which indicates the diameter of the coin in millimeters. Thus a coin listed as AE15 is 15mm in diameter. For those who are metrically challenged, there are approximately 24mm per inch.)

The rise of Philip II began a new chapter in the history of the Greek world. After making himself master of Greece using a combination of military mastery and diplomatic skill, he prepared for his ultimate goal - the conquest of the Persian Empire. An assassin's sword interrupted that goal, but it was carried out by his son Alexander III, soon to be known as `the Great'. His two primary mints were Amphipolis and Pella.

Alexander began rule in his native kingdom but spent only 2 years in Macedon before he conquered much of the known world, freeing the Greek colonies in Asia from the rule of Persia. However, it also spelled the death of democracy in Greece and her colonies as all would now be brought under rule of the Hellenistic kings to follow. At the age of 33 he ruled a kingdom thart stretched from Greece to India. Though there were a multitude of mints for his coinage, Amphipolis remained one of the principal mints. His coinage was extensive and continued for several decades after his death, largely due to the lack of any effective successor to the throne. In some cases his silver coinage was copied as civic issues by a number of cities long over a century after his death.
