Persis was located in southern Persia and issued coins for the first several centuries AD. Early in the 3rd Century AD Artaxerxes (Ardashir), son of Papak, assumed the kingship of one of the major cities (Persepolis), and overthrew all the the neighboring principalities, eventually overthrowing the Arsacid dynasty of Parthia as well (ca AD 224) to become the founder of the new Persian empire of the Sassanians. Due to poorly inscribed legends, dating of Persid coinage is rather conjectural and a precise chronology nearly impossible. The coins below are listed in the order of most catalogs and represent a supposed sequence; dates are given only in a broad context. As can be seen from the new listing, there is much uncertainty on the list of kings and their dates in this series and some kings have very different names from one catalog to another. Notes have been provided in several places to that effect. All the coins with a 700 series number are consignment pieces and will only be listed for a limited time. This is the nicest selection of the coins of Persis I have had in some time. Some pieces did not scan as well as I had hoped and many are better coins than the picture indicates so be sure to read the description as well.
