Chinese Coins

Last update: 27 February 2008

Since many of these coins do not have anything on the reverse, most coins are pictured showing obverse only. Where there is something on the rev. that is interesting or necessary to see, I have pictured it with both sides showing.

Hans Schulman, in his bookd Odd and Curious Money of the World, mentions other odd shaped primitive money types such as Corrugated Cash (bolt-like) and the tongue-like Stone Money, neither of which are illustrated. The deep vertical grooves in this piece suggest a possible function, perhaps serving as a bolt around which silken thread was wrapped. The ancient Chinese word for coin - PU - also meant cloth. Thus it is possible that this stone containing silk thread might have served as a form of currency at some point.

CC120. Chou Dynasty, 1122-221 BC, period of the Spring-Autumn Annals, ca 770-476 BC, AE Bell Money (Zhong Qian or Ch'ung), Opitz page 22. I have a new group of these, nicer than previous ones, as follows:

Opitz lists these with the comment that they were not a currency but are included in many collections. For many years they have been considered a form of money by some authors but these have been found in tombs as sets of bells used for making music and sets include small bells up through large ones, each probably playing one note. Whether currency or not, they are interesting as an artifact. The ones I have now are the nicest I have ever been able to find. Opitz values a 1 inch bell at $100.

CC130. Chou Dynasty, 1122-221 BC, period of the Spring-Autumn Annals, ca 770-476 BC, AE Bridge Money, Ch'ing 4 (Sonorous Chimes), Ref. Coole 6666-6719. During the transitionary period between barter and currency in early China, a number of metal objects appear that take the form of valuable utensils used at the time. Among these are the Bridge money which resembles jade chimes used for music (much like a triangle in an orchestra today), the Knife/Sword and Spade series and the elusive Key money. Several of these items are offered below.

CC131. Chou Dynasty, 1122-221BC, AE Scroll Money. 2 scroll-like bars attached to each other with a decorative swirled motif, Unpublished. These straight back swords were made in the town of Pai Jen, near what is now T'angshan in Hopei. It would be natural to build a casting mint in the vicinity of such a large coal supply as there was and still is near T'angshan, for many years the home of the great Kailing Mining Administration. These are scarcer than the pointed tip swords. From the shape these suggest they may have been fashioned after the swords of the army executioners.

Ch'e (penetrating, mighty) was a posthumous title conferred on emperors and high officials; Wu meant Military and Ti meant emperor, thus his dynastic title actually means Mightly Military Emperor. In 119BC Wu-ti experimented with debased coins (money that has less metal value than what is stated on the coin). Like most such experiments before and since, his failed. In 118BC, he issued the first full-weight wu-chu and included rims to prevent filing. Wu-ti also charged those who wished to interview him in a rather interesting way. He sold them an embroidered square foot of white deerskin for only 400,000 copper Ch'u and they had to wear the deerskin at each interview!

Wang Mang was a nephew of the empress-dowager of the Han Dynasty and a high court official. Following a succession of weak rulers, he seized the throne for himself in AD9 (some references give his starting date as AD7). He sought to institute numerous reforms, attacking the privileges of the wealthy and landowners by nationalizing all of the land and outlawing the sale of slaves. He was unable to carry it through and was forced to repeal these edicts. However, his greatest success was fiscal. He insisted that all gold be exchanged for copper and cornered the market in gold. By his death is AD23 the royal treasury held approximately 5 million ounces of gold (more than the total supply of medieval Europe) and the strain on gold supply was felt as far away as Rome (yes, there was trade between China and Rome through intermediaries), prompting the Emperor Tiberius to ban the wearing of silk because it had to paid for in gold. Numerous natural disasters(the Yellow River changed course twice in 6 years), however, increased the common misery and, having alienated the monied classes and never having had much support from the provinces where the members of the former Han Dynasty still held sway, Wang Mang found himself without friends when rebellion broke out in AD23 and he was slain by a common soldier.

Revival of the Han Dynasty - Eastern Han

The fall of Wang Mang brought on 2 years of civil war. The Red Eyebrows, a force of uneducated peasants from the east along the Yellow River and driven by famine, were so called because of the red paint on their foreheads that they used to distinguish themselves from the government troops. As they swept west, the former imperial family tried to use them to regain power, but they could not agree on who would be the candidate for emperor. Guang Wudi stepped forward in AD25 and seized power, but it took him 10 years of bitter struggle to fend off the other 11 claimants and consolidate his power. This period saw the sacking of Chang'an, the capital, and the sacking of many Han Dynasty tombs and was so devastating that Guang Wudi forbade the word war to be uttered in his presence. Guang Wudi moved the capital east to Luoyang, thus his dynasty is referred to as the Eastern Han.

Lingdi ascended the throne at age 12. The reign of Lingdi began and ended with attempts to massacre the eunuchs who dominated much of the palace beauracracy. At the beginning, the plot was leaked and the eunuchs foiled the plans, gaining even more power and ruling for 20 years, during which many senior officials were killed or disgraced, their places being taken by eunuchs or their relatives. In order to supplement falling tax revenues, which were falling due to the skimming of corrupt officials, he authorized the sale of posts and titles. The administration slowly disintegrated and was unable to cope with a growing agricultural crisis. Rural unrest reached a peak in AD184 and a rebellion broke out in the east (this group was called the Yellow Turbans after their headgear). An army of 360,000 men swept west. Shortly after this a group known as the Five Pecks of Rice sect revolted in the southwest and established a breakaway state in Sichuan. The long struggle to put doewn these uprisings caused a shift in the political scene. Unable to rely on the central power, the provincial leaders established their own armies and subsequently power shifted to the warlords who controlled the emperor. Upon Lingdi's death there was a battle for succession and a ruthless warlord from the west, Dong Zhou intervened with his troops to eradicate the eunuch's power. he occupied and estroyed the capital of Luoyang, murdered 2,000 or more eunuchs and burned the imperial library, causing more damage than the First Emperor's Burning of the Books. The new young emperor was killed and his half brother Xiandi became the last Han emperor. He fled north under the protection of a northern warlord as ruled nominally until AD220. At that time the warlord's son usurped the throne and founded the Wei Dynasty. The following year a warlord in the south in Sichuan, Liu Bei, also declared himself emperor, taking the dynastic name Han (known as Shu Han) and a third general, Sun Ch'uan, founded the Wu Dynasty in AD222. This ushered in the period known as the Three Kingdoms. What followed was nearly three and a half centuries of almost incessant warfare.

Epoch of the Three Kingdoms - Wei, Wu and Minor Han, ca AD 220-280

This period in Chinese history is known as the golden age of chivalry and romance. the Founders of these 3 dynasties were immortalized in a famous novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Each ruler attempted to establish unity and claimed a legitimate right to the Mantle of Heaven, but none was able to control regional factionalism. The first Wei ruler - Wei Wendi - restored central finances using state agricultural settlements, but he was followed by a series of weak rulers and they were dominated by frequent attacks from the northern barbarian tribes. The last Wei emperor conquered the Minor Han kingdom, but was deposed 2 years later by one of his generals who founded the Western Jin Dynasty, ruling as Wedi. In AD280 Wudi was able to defeat the Kingdom of Wu whose emperor Modi was a drunkard and famed for his 5,000 concubines. thus China was once again united.

Period of the Six Kingdoms (also known as the Period of Disunity), AD 265-589

Jin Wudi was a strong and able leader and improved communications and transportation by building a pontoon bridge over the Yellow River and re-establishing the western trade routes. He formed a library of 30,000 volumes at his capital of Luoyang and employed a cartographer who used a grid system to make maps with a scale of 125 miles to 1 inch. Powerful landowners made central government difficult and he did not fare so well economically, He also gave each of his 25 sons a principality and sibling rivalry shattered the unity he had created upon his death. Two of the princes sought the help of northern tribes and one, Huidi (AD290-306) spent his reign fleeing from one capital to another in chaos. By the time it was all done, the northern tribes controlled the central plains and the Chinese were driven south to the Yangzi Valley where Yuandi gathered the remnants of court and declared himself emperor, establishing the Eastern Jin Dysnasty. China was now divided between the northern dynasties under non-Han rulers and the southern dynasties, now the guardians of Chinese civilization with their capital at Nanjing. During this time the northern tribes restored a stable central economy, paving the way for reunification in the late 6th century by a northern general, the founder of the Sui Dynasty. It was also during this time that Buddhism was incorporated into the Confucian society through the influences in the north.

Sui Dynasty

China had been broken into a series of small kingdoms since around AD 220 when the Han Dynasty had collapsed, throwing China once again into the chaos of warring states. In AD 581 a general, Sui Wendi, from a northern aristocratic family with a long tradition of government service, usurped the throne in order to restore order and began the Sui Dynasty. He soon had conquered all of China and restored unity. The Dynasty was to be short-lived, however, lasting less than 30 years. There is only one coin type known from this dynasty, the one below (a few varieties exist).

T'ang Dynasty, AD 618-907

By AD 618 China was once again slipping toward anarchy. The Sui emperor was assassinated that year and the first emperor of the T'ang dynasty took power. Li Yuan, who served as emperor by the name of Kao Tsu, was also from a northern aristocratic family with a long tradition of government service and usurped the throne in order to restore order. The T'ang Dynasty is regarded by the Chinese as a Golden Age in their history. During this period one dynasty ruled the whole country and foreign tribes on their borders paid tribute and many were absorbed into the kingdom. It was also during this period that the Silk Road trade with the west reached its zenith. Poetry reached a zenith and prose became popular. Buddhism also reached a zenith and Taoism flourished. The placing of a regnal title on Chinese coins begins during the middle T'ang period.

During the Sung Dynasty the way of life of the scholarly gentleman took on a characteristic style which endured for several centuries. Many moneyed men cultivated their artistic, literary and antiquarian interests. Calligraphy and painting flourished and was developed to a high style during this period. One of the most famous of the Sung emperors, Hui Tsung (the ruler above) was a talented painter and calligrapher. He built up the imperial collection of painting (over 6,000 paintings) and personally developed new styles of calligraphy and of flower and bird painting, for which he is well known. This coin issue is considered to be of highest calligraphic style and the new style was overseen by Hui Tsung personally.
